Royal opening for Scarborough theatre
Scarborough Borough Council (SBC) has announced that Her Majesty The Queen is to officially unveil the North Yorkshire town's open air theatre on 20 May.
The new-look 6,500-seat venue, which has undergone a £3.5m refurbishment funded by SBC, will be opened by Her Majesty as part of a royal visit to North Yorkshire and the Duchy of Lancaster. A surplus from the first phase of the resort's Sands development enabled the council to finance the improvements at the open air theatre.
SBC chief executive Jim Dillon said: "It is 35 years since Her Majesty last visited Scarborough, so this will be an historic occasion for both the town and the whole borough. "We couldn't ask for a more special guest to open a very special theatre; the occasion is certainly one that none of us will ever forget."
