Russia to invest RUB90bn in sports development
Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin has revealed government plans to spend RUB90bn (£1.9bn) on sports development over the next three years.
A development strategy for fitness and sport was adopted in 2009, which includes a vision to promote sport among children and teenagers. The Russian government aims to improve physical education through measures including new programmes and the modernisation of school infrastructure.
Plans also include an expansion of the country's network of fitness complexes and junior sports club, as well as an overhaul of the national qualification system for elite performers. The proposals will see RUB39.5bn (£840,700) spent in 2011, with RUB2.5bn (£53,200) to be invested in sports medicine alone - a significant increase on 2010 levels.
Speaking at a meeting on the strategy, Putin said: "The programme is intended to promote the value of a healthy and active life in the community. "It is essential that regular exercise and abstinence from pernicious habits become the norm for a majority of our people. I see, in that goal, a true accomplishment for each man and woman."
