Ryanair to consider 'fat tax' proposals
Budget airline Ryanair is considering proposals to introduce additional fees for obese travellers, after the move was backed in an online poll of more than 100,000 passengers.
More than 30,000 people voted in favour of introducing the 'fat tax', and Ryanair is now asking passengers to vote on four potential formats for how the charges could be implemented. In addition to the 'fat tax', a quarter of passengers voted in favour of a 1 euro (90p) charge for toilet paper on board flights, while 24 per cent backed a 3 euro (£2.71) fee to smoke in a converted toilet cubicle.
Ryanair spokesperson Stephen McNamara said: "With passengers voting overwhelmingly for a 'fat tax', we are now asking them to suggest which format the charge should take. "These charges, if introduced, might also act as an incentive to some of our very large passengers to lose a little weight and hopefully feel a little lighter and healthier."
