Ryanair to scrap airport check-in
Ryanair, the Ireland-based budget airline, has announced that it is to scrap check-in desks at airports for all new passenger bookings from 20 May as part of efforts to move the entire service online.
Passengers will now also have to face a £5 online check-in fee on all flights not covered by a promotional offer, while a £40 fee is also being introduced for people who turn up to the airport without a pre-printed boarding pass. Stephen McNamara, a spokesperson for Ryanair, said: "Passengers travelling without checked in bags have already embraced our online check-in service and the extension of this service to all passengers, including those with hold luggage and those travelling with infants will allow all passengers to forever avoid check-in queues.
"This will also allow Ryanair to lower our airport and handling costs and pass these savings to all passengers in the form of even lower air fares next winter." The company is aiming to withdraw all check-in services from 146 airports by 1 October.
