SAC funds Wasps Artists’ Studios
Wasps Artists’ Studios (Workshop and Artists’ Studios Provision Scotland) and the Scottish Arts Council (SAC) have formed a new partnership to transform Wasps into one of the largest social enterprises in the arts while creating new studio spaces for artists.
The SAC National Lottery Fund has pledged £3m to develop five new arts buildings in five communities in five years as well as to restructure the organisation and employ new staff.
More than 140 new studio spaces will be created, supporting up to 200 visual artists and crafts makers each year, reducing the waiting list by up to a half.
Following the five-year investment, Wasps will operate without any further arts council revenue support.
Iain Munro, SAC head of lottery, said: “We are excited about this new investment which, over the course of five years, will help meet the high demand for artists’ studio space while placing Wasps on a secure financial footing, independent of revenue support from the SAC. This will be a unique funding arrangement in the arts in Scotland and one which we will be monitoring closely.”
Wasps and the SAC will agree on the locations for the new facilities in the coming months, and selected projects will be delivered in partnership with local authorities. Details: www.scottisharts.org.uk
