SKOPE research evaluates impact of REPs
The Economic and Social Research Council’s Centre for Skills, Knowledge and Organisational Performance (SKOPE) is currently undertaking a research project on skills and training in the UK fitness industry, including the impact of the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) on the industry.
The project, headed by Dr Caroline Lloyd, will be the first to investigate how far health clubs and leisure centres are changing their training practices in response to the Register and whether it is pushing the sector to upgrade the skills of the workforce.
The research will be undertaken in Coventry and Reading. For the next month, Lloyd will be contacting fitness clubs – including chains, independents and local authority leisure centres – to interview managers and employees.
The aim will be to build up a picture of the local labour market in the two areas, the different recruitment strategies available and mechanisms to improve retention and skill development. It will assess the level of awareness of the Register among managers and fitness employees, attitudes towards the operation of the Register and the impact it is having on training practices and skill levels of the workforce.
The project aims to contribute to future strategies in workforce development that will help operators and training providers to identify some of the key industry issues. All those participating in the research will receive customised reports of the main findings. Details: [email protected] and www.exerciseregister.org.uk
