Scottish artists net £1m funding
The Edinburgh Fringe festival has been given a £1m cash injection by the Scottish Government in a bid to help showcase homegrown dance and theatre artists over the next two years.
The 'Made in Scotland' initiative was launched by the Scottish Government last year with a £200,000 grant through the Edinburgh Festivals Expo Fund. The first performances of the initiative will be staged in August. All Scottish-based arts organisations and performers are entitled to apply for the scheme, which also aims to support international touring opportunities, as well as offering a year-round programme of training to companies in order to maximise their impact.
The government's Expo Fund is expected to contribute £6m to support the development of Scottish-based work at each of the 12 festivals in Edinburgh over the next three years. Scottish culture minister Michael Russell said: "Expo is about recognising the exceptional creative talent that exists in Scotland and giving it an international platform upon which to excel. Our renowned Edinburgh Festivals are celebrated the world over and Scottish-based artists have so much to offer.
"It is particularly exciting that 'Made in Scotland' comes into being in this year of Homecoming when we will welcome so many people from around the world. Visitors to the Fringe will experience the diversity of theatre and dance being made in Scotland today and I am sure the experience will be truly enlivening." 'Made in Scotland' is the result of a partnership between the Fringe, the Federation of Scottish Theatre and the Scottish Arts Council.
