Scottish tourism focuses on Russia
Fourteen Scottish tourism businesses have embarked on a marketing trip to Moscow in a bid to boost the number of Russian tourists visiting Scotland.
The trip, which is the first of its kind, has been organised by national tourism agency VisitScotland alongside the Scottish Council for Development and Industry and VisitBritain.
The businesses include accommodation providers, tour operators, visitor attractions and language schools and all hope to tap into the lucrative Russian tourism market.
Philip Riddle, VisitScotland’s chief executive said: “This is a great chance for VisitScotland and tourism businesses to work together to sell Scotland in Russia.
“Most Russians book their trips through tour operators, so the chance to pitch one-to-one to key Russian operators is a fantastic opportunity for the Scottish businesses involved.”
The Russian tourism market is an increasingly important one for Scotland, due to its growing economy and increasing levels of disposable income. According to the Russian Association of Travel Agencies, Russian tourists spend around £100 a night – more than any other nationality in the world.
Meanwhile, Scotland is seen as an attractive holiday destination for Russians because it is prestigious and good for both luxury shopping and culture.
The Scottish tourism industry employs 200,000 people in more than 20,000 businesses. The industry generates £4.2bn revenue a year, or 5 per cent of Scotland’s GDP. Details: www.visitscotland.com
