Scottish tourism sector 'playing vital role'
Scottish tourism minister Jim Mather has praised the industry's resilience and "vital role" in helping drive the nation's recovery, following the recession.
In a visit to Aviemore, Mather said the sector's response to the tough economic challenges had allowed Scotland's economy to return to growth in recent months. According to VisitScotland figures, nearly 12.5 million tourists from the UK opted for a 'staycation' in Scotland during 2009, while overseas visitor numbers increased by 385,000.
Mather said: "Tourism businesses the length and breadth of Scotland have risen robustly to the challenges brought by the recession and went out of their way to help visitors who were stranded as a result of recent volcanic eruptions in Iceland. "This is testament to the resilience of the sector, which has been instrumental in Scotland's recent return to economic growth."
