Sheffield gets active
Sheffield City Council has developed a strategy to encourage local people to be more physically active in the run up to the 2012 Games.
Tomorrow the cabinet will be presented with a six-point plan focusing on participation, the Cultural Olympiad, top level sport, major events and training camps, business development, and coaches and volunteers.
Initiatives include expanding upon the success of the Great Yorkshire Run event and the Care Home Olympics scheme, as well as introducing free swimming lessons to the city's residents and introducing a range of sports activities at schools.
Efforts are also being made to recruit more sports volunteers and coaches and to attract athletes from around the world to the city's pre-Olympics training camps.
Cllr Sylvia Dunkley, cabinet member for culture, sport and tourism, said: "There's huge potential for us to promote Sheffield, improve local people's health, get more people involved in sport and being more active, increase the skills of local people, maximise local business opportunities and get more people to enjoy and participate in arts and culture here in the city.
