Should Historic Scotland manage nationally significant sites?
Independent think tank The Policy Institute has published a report – Old Stones in a New Setting: Breathing New Life Into Scotland’s Built Heritage – on how Scotland’s historic sites would be better operated by independent operators.
The organisation claims that although government agencies such as Historic Scotland are well-intentioned, policy at present suffers from insufficient accountability.
According to the publication, Historic Scotland – which is accountable to the Scottish Executive -– lacks innovation in the way it manages the 345 buildings and monuments under its control and does not produce sufficient evidence that its grant-making and education programmes are appropriate.
The institute advocates that the private sector should be enlisted to manage and operate all historic sites, with Historic Scotland acting as guardian of particularly significant buildings. Details: www.policyinstitute.info
