Skate park opens in Alexandra Park
A new extreme sports facility is set to open in Alexandra Park, Newtown, Wigan, on 2 July.
The £122,000 multi-use facility will feature a mini-ramp, Wembley gap, flatbank, quarter-pipe, jumpbox, stepped grind-box, grind box, driveway, hipped flatbank and hipped quarter-pipe.
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust developed the site under the borough’s Extreme Sports Strategy.
British BMX champion and Skateboard coach Mike Pardon said: “The new facility is well designed and will appeal to both skaters and bikers. Full marks to the Trust and council for recognising the need for such a skatepark. With BMX racing becoming a full Olympic sport in 2008, and the proven benefits of action sports as an aid to learning, it can’t be long before the borough produces a new generation of champions.”
The Trust’s parks regeneration team aims to provide more extensive facilities in phase two of the project, pending further investment.
