Skills Academy moves forward
SkillsActive is moving ahead with plans to launch a National Skills Academy for Sport and Active Leisure.
The academy will meet training needs within the sector in response to reports that 20 per cent of the industry’s 36,500 organisations suffer from skills gaps and 29 per cent of the leisure workforce is not qualified to level 2 NVQ or equivalent.
The move aims to combat stagnation within the sector, with growth in the sector currently being constrained by a workforce with a low skills base at a time when employment in the sector is growing by 3.9 per cent per annum – four times that of the whole of UK industry put together.
The academy will operate via nine regional hubs in England, supported by a website.
The first three hubs will be located in London – the central office – at Sheffield United FC and at COMET (Centre for Outdoor Management, Education and Training) in Penrith.
