Sky let off pricing hook by OFT
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has announced that pay channel Sky’s prices were “high, but not excessive”.
The competition watchdog said that it sees no need to proceed any further with the complaint, lodged by the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR) last year.
Sky caused uproar last summer, when it increased its annual subscription for Sky Sports by an average of 20 per cent.
Licensees and pub operators argued that the rises were seven times the rate of inflation.
The OFT said in its report that there were insufficient grounds to suspect that Sky had used its market position to breach the Competition Act.
It is believed that around 30,000 clubs and clubs around the UK subscribe to the channel in an effort to attract more customers.
