Southern Star to remain closed for 12 months
The AUD$40m (£20m, US£30.6m, €22.6m) Southern Star Observation Wheel in Melbourne, Australia, which was forced to close in January after hot weather caused buckling, is to be dismantled and some parts completely replaced, in a year-long repair programme.
The 120m-high ferris wheel attraction had only been open since 20 December 2008, after a delay in the delivery of certain parts caused it to miss its scheduled November launch.
The majority of the repair work, which will be undertaken under the original manufacturer's warranty by the wheel's engineers, Japan-based Sanoyas Hishino Meisho, is to take place off-site.
Fred Maybury, chairman of the Southern Star Management Group, which owns the wheel, said: "The works will involve the removal of the existing cabins and wheel framing which will be replaced with newly fabricated spokes and rim leaving the columns, hub and three storey wheel building in place.
"We are committed to undertaking a rectification program that will deliver the best result, providing Melburnians and visitors with a world-class tourism attraction once more."
