Sport England reveals participation growth
Sport England's bid to get one million more people taking part in sport ahead of the 2012 Olympics has been boosted with continued growth over the past 21 months.
According to the latest snapshot from the Active People Survey, more than 7 million people over the age of 16 years old participate in a sport at least three times a week. Over the past 21 months, the overall figure across England has grown by 200,000, while the number of women taking in sport has increased for three consecutive quarters following a decline in the previous year.
Sports participation has also increased by 78,900 among non-white adults according to the research. London; the North West; the South West; and the West Midlands all recorded a "statistically significant increase" in participation between July 2009 and July 2010.
