Sports centre investment ditched for outdoor activities
Tendring District Council in Essex no longer proposes to roll out Lifestyle gyms at leisure centres across the district.
Plans by the council's former administration to overhaul sports facilities in Walton, Dovercourt and Harwich have been dropped by the current Conservative leadership, in preference for the promotion of outdoor activities such as walking, cycling and water sports.
The reintroduction of a tourism strategy to encourage greater use of activities related to the area's heritage and natural environment will now be put in place.
Peter Halliday, cabinet member for finance, explained: "We will not be rolling out the Lifestyle brand at all our leisure centres.
"The initial funding proposals do not stack up - even with the borrowing provisions and the funds identified by our predecessors, there is still a funding gap of between £300,000 and £500,000
"We also believe that a more diverse leisure provision will be much more appealing to a wider audience. We have excellent leisure centres which are very popular with a section of the population - but there are others who want to look outside the gym for their activities.
"Tendring has wonderful natural assets and a heritage which has tremendous potential. We will be looking to open people's eyes to the terrific range of opportunities that Tendring has to offer."
Despite the change in leisure development policy, the council has pledged to continue with plans to provide fitness facilities for those with disabilities in Harwich and Dovercourt.
