Stevenage’s urban park to be regenerated
Work has begun on the refurbishment of Town Centre Gardens in Stevenage.
Funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government, the Gardens will be completely redesigned and refurbished over the next two to three years.
The first stage, which began just before Christmas, will see the northern area of the park completely transformed.
A new central footpath will be built, along with a new 400m circular jogging track. All vandalised and diseased trees will also be replaced by up to 25 new mature Oak trees.
According to Stevenage Borough Council, the works will improve accessibility by making it easier to reach the Gardens from the town centre, and will also create new activity spaces which can be used for concerts, plays and other organised leisure activities.
Councillor John Gardner, deputy leader of the council, said: “We will completely transform Town Centre Gardens into a safe and pleasant green space which can be enjoyed by everyone who lives and works in the town.
“The plans were drawn up after extensive consultation with local residents and with those people who use the park. We have taken their comments on board and we feel confident that our plans will provide a facility which everyone can enjoy.
