Stoke arts centre to get £2m revamp
The Mitchell Memorial Youth Arts Centre in Stoke-on-Trent is to get a £1.95m makeover.
The complex consists of two buildings, the Mitchell Memorial Youth Theatre and Cartwright House, which will both be refurbished.
Peter Courtie, cultural development manager for the council, said: “This complex provides an invaluable resource for a broad range of community groups and voluntary and professional arts.
“This acts as a catalyst for the development of performing arts, the voluntary arts sector, the creative industries and getting people involved in a broad range of arts activities.”
The funding was secured after the city council’s Community Assets Programme application to the Big Lottery was accepted, and the council now has six months to deliver the project.
“This grant will transform and revitalise the building and provide a top-class arts venue in the heart of the city,” continued Courtie. “It is great news for the city and it shows that we have impressed with our application and that this city is serious about the arts and culture and the creative industries.”
