Study to consider Hitchin museum proposals
North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC) has appointed architects Buttress Fuller Alsop Williams (BFAW) to carry out a feasibility study into proposals to convert Hitchin Town Hall into a new museum.
BFAW was selected to undertake the twelve-week study by the new Museums Facilities Working Group, which has been set up by the council and includes local residents who have been invited to have their say on the plans. The report, which is due to be presented along with associated drawings in mid-October, will consider the suitability of Hitchin Town Hall as a venue for the new museum, the costs involved with the project, and which artefacts should be put on show or kept in storage.
Tricia Gibbs, NHDC portfolio holder for community engagement, said: "We have an aspiration for a world class museum and community facility to serve the residents of North Hertfordshire and believe that Buttress Fuller Alsop Williams' record on delivering the high quality work we are looking to achieve is proven. "It is very useful to have the help of so many local societies and interest groups to steer the development of these plans. This will allow their views relating to this community facility to be considered at an early stage and help us to identify plans which reflect the whole community's aspirations."
Previous schemes involving BFAW have included the new Stockwood Discovery Centre in Luton, which opened in 2008; The Rotunda - William Smith Museum of Geology in Scarborough; and Clitheroe Castle Museum in Lancashire.
