Survey reveals support for Games in London
A new nationwide survey carried out by the British Market Research Bureau (BMRB) has revealed that 76 per cent of people questioned are pleased London is staging the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in 2012.
The poll of 2,000 people also suggests that the location is primarily supported by 25 to 34-year-olds (90 per cent of all respondents), while those in Northern Ireland (88 per cent), London (82 per cent) and (also 80 per cent) southern England gave the greatest regional support.
Even among those aged 65 and older, 66 per cent backed London.
The survey also suggests that a substantial 81 per cent think 2012 will have a positive effect on London, and 70 per cent on the country as a whole, with three –quarters believing the UK will host successful Games.
Olympic minister Tessa Jowell said: “More than two years after we won the Games, over three-quarters of those questioned remain enthusiastic about the event coming to London – a sign of a positive attitude which will inspire us all to deliver the maximum benefits for the whole country.”
However, despite the high percentage of support demonstrated, those questioned did not feel well informed of events, with only 39 per cent knowing “a lot” or “a little” about plans for the 2012 Games, 41 per cent knowing “not very much” and the remaining one fifth knowing nothing.
The survey was carried out to assist work on the government’s Our Promise for 2012, in preparation for the Legacy Action Plan, which is due to be published in the next few months.
The most rated promise, according to the survey, is providing opportunities for local volunteering, cultural and physical activity, followed by the nation demonstrating its capacity to be creative, inclusive and welcoming.
