Swansea Council to review leisure operations
An "in-depth" investigation into alternative management options for a range of indoor leisure facilities across Swansea could be carried out under plans put forward by the local authority.
Swansea Council's cabinet is being asked to back a review of facilities such as the Grand Theatre, the boating lake at Singleton Park, a crazy golf site at Mumbles and seven community leisure centres. Some council-owned sports pitches and the Ashleigh Road golf course also comprise the leisure facilities that could be subject to a review, which comes amid efforts to reduce public spending.
Options that could be investigated by the local authority include keeping the services in-house, regional partnerships with other nearby councils, working with private companies or partnering with non-profit organisations. Graham Thomas, cabinet member for culture, recreation and tourism for Swansea Council, said: "This type of review has already been successfully implemented in many places across the UK, so it's by no means unique to Swansea.
"No decisions have been made and comprehensive talks with staff, unions and other potentially affected parties will take place if cabinet backs this thorough review." The LC, the Wales National Pool, the Indoor Bowls Centre at Landore and the Liberty Stadium are among a number of facilities in Swansea already operated by alternative means.
According to the council, any possible changes to the operation of council-owned facilities would come into effect by 2012.
