Tate denies Lowther Castle partnership
The Tate has denied that it is in partnership with the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) to transform a ruined castle in the Lake District into a new gallery.
The Sunday Times reported that the Tate was planning to transform the Grade II-listed Lowther Castle & Gardens in Penrith, Cumbria, into a visitor attraction with a 1,500-seat amphitheatre and an underground gallery featuring exhibitions from the Tate and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
While the NWDA and Lowther Castle & Garden’s Trust are planning a multi-million pound restoration project – which includes the amphitheatre – and have applied to National Lottery’s Living Landmarks programme, the Tate has denied any formal involvement with the scheme.
A spokesperson said: “The organisers of the Lowther Castle project recently met with representatives of Tate to outline their plans. While Tate wishes the project success, no formal partnership or relationship exists between the two organisations at present.”
