Tesco approval paves way for Kirklees centre
Plans for a new Tesco store on the site of a Huddersfield leisure centre have been given the green light, paving the way for a replacement facility to be built elsewhere in the West Yorkshire town.
The planning inspectorate has approved the superstore proposals, which is to be sited in the Southgate area of the town. A new leisure centre is being planned for Springwood, although its facility mix is yet to be finalised.
Plans for the Tesco development had been called in by the communities secretary due to its size and complexity, with the scheme to help fund the construction of the leisure centre.
Kirklees Council leader Mehboob Khan said: "This decision indicates [the planning inspectorate's] support for the scheme, which secures a good deal for the town.
"The new 21st century sports centre, which will be constructed in the next few years, will be state-of-the-art and replaces a building which is long past its best."
