The sky’s the limit for National Maritime Museum
The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded £7m towards the £15m Time and Space project in the Royal Observatory at Greenwich.
The listed South Building will be opened up to allow access to the National Maritime Museum’s instrument collections and educational facilities will be provided for visitors with interests in astronomy and timekeeping.
Museum director, Roy Clare, said: “Time and Space is an imaginative, forward-looking response to public expectations of a national museum in the 21st Century.”
The landscaping and visitor route around the Royal Observatory site will also be redesigned to integrate the site with the South Building.
“Looking up at the stars will never be the same again,” said Sue Bowers, HLF regional manager for London. “New galleries, interactive experiments and educational opportunities will demonstrate how astronomy and timekeeping affect everyday life and inspire the imagination to question our place in the universe.”
Further funds totalling £3.8m, including monies from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, have been pledged in addition to the £7m Heritage Lottery Fund grant.
The NMM is launching a fundraising campaign to raise the remaining funds needed to complete the project. Details: www.nmm.ac.uk
