Think tank backs Heathrow expansion plans
The Conservative Party's pledge to reverse plans for the expansion of London's Heathrow Airport in favour of new high-speed railway links has been called into question by a new report.
According to the Bow Group, a Conservative think tank, David Cameron's plans to increase the number of high-speed rail links as an alternative to expansion has "inadvertently created a false debate" on the subject. Lord Heseltine has supported the findings proposed by The Right Track, which argues that the development of a new high-speed railway network would complement the expansion of Heathrow rather than provide an alternative for the proposed additional runway.
Report author Tony Lodge also called on the government to support a direct link to Heathrow to "end its enduring lack of proper and effective public transport connection" when it publishes its plans for future high-speed railway provision in the spring.
