Topping out for Matlock leisure centre
A ceremony is to be held on 18 October to mark the topping out of a new £12m leisure centre, which is being built on a site near Matlock, Derbyshire.
Donna Kellogg, former Commonwealth Games badminton gold medallist, and local dignitaries will attend at the event in a bid to help celebrate the construction milestone. London-based Morgan Sindall was chosen by Derbyshire Dales District Council (DDDC) to build the Central Area Leisure Centre, which remains on schedule for completion next summer.
Facilities at the centre will include a competition-standard, eight-lane swimming pool with a moveable floor; a fitness suite; and a main sports hall to cater for basketball, football and volleyball. Meanwhile, DDDC has also earmarked six possible names and logos for the Central Area Leisure Centre, which include Zenith, Arc, Inmo, One, Reyu and Viva.
Dave Brooks, the council's director of planning and development services, said: "We need to get away from the perception some people have of local authority leisure centres and market this as the exciting leisure and tourism attraction that it will be, for local people and visitors alike." A consultation has now commenced to find out which name local residents prefer.
