Tough training means it's all downhill for World Chamapion Danny
Danny Hart of Redcar had a very special 18th birthday – for that’s the day he won the World Championship in downhill mountain biking in Austria.
Danny, from Redcar, has his training sponsored by sports trust Tees Valley Leisure, and his exciting and dangerous sport has taken him around the world – he’s competed in countries as far afield as Australia, South Africa, Canada and Slovenia.
He said: “I’ve always taken part in two-wheel sports such as BMX and motocross, so downhill racing is really in my blood.
“In downhill mountain biking, you’re timed from the top to the bottom, racing through trees, technical obstacles and all sorts of terrain. You find a real variation around the world in the tracks, and of course the temperature and altitude vary a lot too.”
Danny lifted the World Championship in September by winning the league, and he also scooped a bronze medal on the same day for coming third in a one-off event.
“I think the secret of my success is training – I go to the Redcar Leisure Centre gym three times a week – the leisure centre has all the facilities and the gym is well equipped and I do other training too.
“Dedication is so important,” he said. “I’ll be working hard for the next season, because I’m moving up to the senior league.
“And I suppose the sport is dangerous because of the high speeds – but then again, you could get hurt just crossing the road at home!”
Alan Mitchell of Redcar Leisure Centre said Tees Valley Leisure were impressed by Danny’s achievements. “We’re delighted to be helping such an outstanding sportsman to take on the world,” he said.
“We’d like to wish Danny all the best in the senior league, and it’s great to see him using our facilities for his training with such prestigious results.”
