Tourism aims 'concern' Scottish Parliament
A Scottish parliamentary committee has expressed "concern" about the country's ability to achieve 50 per cent growth in tourism set by the Scottish Government six years ago.
The Scottish Parliament's Economy, Energy and Tourism committee has published a report examining some of the issues currently affecting Scotland's tourism industry.
Among those to give evidence to the committee as part of the report process was the national tourism agency, VisitScotland, which said the target was unrealistic in the current climate.
The agency has now been asked by the committee to produce annual statements outlining the progress made towards the target, as well as its plans to address any shortfall.
Committee convener Murdo Fraser said: "Tourism plays a vital role in the Scottish economy. It generates approximately £4.2bn worth of income and employs around 215,000 people.
"While the committee welcomes the ambitious 50 per cent growth target in place, we are concerned about the apparent lack of clarity in the sector around the ability to meet this target."
