Tourism push for Perthshire
A scheme dubbed Unlocking Economic Potential in Perthshire and Angus has been launched to promote the natural tourism potential of the region and increase revenue in rural areas by 20 per cent.
The three-year initiative will target four key areas: activity tourism (golf, adventure, fishing, shooting, cycling and kayaking); ancestral & heritage tourism (genealogy, events, culture and roots festivals); food & drink tourism (local produce, farm shops, Scottish cuisine and whisky); and freedom tourism (wildlife, forests, walking and gardens).
Cllr John Kellas said: “The tourism industry in Perthshire and Angus is facing worldwide competition in a growing market where quality service delivery and enhanced visitor experience will be key to success in developing tourism in the region.
“We have two key objectives. The first is to build and support sustainable and competitive tourism businesses, committed to quality service delivery. We also hope to develop and implement focussed, cost-effective strategies and action plans for integrated product development and marketing.”
Unlocking Economic Potential has received £400,000 from the European Regional Development Funds (ERDF) and will run until March 2011.
