Training funding offered to London fitness businesses
Register of Exercise Professionals’ (REPs) members who are registered at level 2 as qualified gym instructors could qualify for free training – if they work in the London area.
Their employers are being offered the chance to upgrade their skill-set as part of the Adult Advanced Apprenticeship programme which is being led and delivered by YMCAfit.
As one of the UK’s leading fitness providers, the organisation is, in particular, looking to help employees who might be considered to be at a disadvantage in the workplace. This could include those who are disabled, lone parents, over the age of 50, workers threatened with redundancy, and black or ethnic minority women who are not in full-time employment.
The scheme, which is co-financed by the European Social Fund (ESF) and the London Learning and Skills Council (LSC), is open to SMEs (small, medium and micro sized enterprises), that is, companies employing fewer than 250 staff with an income less than 50m euro.
Eligible employees must be 25 years old or over, currently working in the fitness industry for a minimum of 16 hours per week, and be living or working in the capital.
Taking part in the Adult Advanced Apprenticeship programme will allow businesses to benefit from flexible staff training (which can take place in or outside of the workplace), and gain staff who are more qualified, motivated, competent and customer-focused.
Employees enrolled onto the programme will build their skills, knowledge and experience of fitness instruction and of the industry, whilst still being able to work. They will gain a nationally recognised qualification and be able to access assistance and support from YMCAfit’s Guidance Assessing team.
Robin Gargrave, executive director of YMCAfit, said: “YMCAfit is totally committed to improving the skills and knowledge of exercise professionals and supporting employer workforce development.
“The new Adult Advanced Apprenticeship funded programme does both and also addresses the issue of under-representation by certain groups at more senior levels in the fitness industry.”
Commenting on the specific benefits of continued learning, Gargrave added: “It provides incentives and rewards for the employee and enables them to provide a greater range and higher level of customer care.
“Research indicates that upgrading skills refreshes and re-motivates employees, increases their company loyalty, and boosts productivity.” Details: www.ymcafit.org.uk
