Training providers discuss CPD
Twelve Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) approved training providers met in Birmingham recently to discuss a range of subjects, including how to respond to the growing demand for career development and continuing professional development (CPD).
Concerns have been voiced that employers might use CPD as a ‘short cut’ and avoid properly qualifying employees and training could replace the need for qualifications and in-depth study in main subject areas.
The group agreed that CPD should not replace qualifications as an indication of a person’s competence and knowledge to teach or perform a particular skill or discipline.
REPs registrar Cliff Collins confirmed that endorsed training only, does not give a category of registration and will issue further guidance on this matter. He said CPD should be about gaining a piece of learning which ensures the ongoing upkeep of existing knowledge and skills.
The REPs website carries a chart which shows the levels and categories of registration which are included on a members’ certificate of registration. This can be used to help plan for career development and progression.
Only REPs approved providers who are certified by awarding bodies – such as Central YMCA Qualifications, Premier IQ, OCR and City and Guilds – provide courses which lead to a full qualification or to units of qualification.
