Travelodge reveals plans for 2012
Travelodge is to invest £140m in an expansion push which will see the budget chain build 20 new hotels – providing 3,500 rooms – in London in time for the 2012 Olympic Games.
The hotel chain anticipates that the investment will result in a 40 per cent ownership of the budget market in London.
Five of the 20 sites are being sought in the Olympic area to cater to the main sporting stadiums, including two in the sports village.
This year will see a further 1,000 rooms opening in the capital – City Road (392), London Terminal 5 (297), Euston (150) and Southwark (202).
The new hotels will all feature a new room design.
Travelodge is also asking the government to commit to a clearer marketing structure and early planning for overseas campaigns; a £25m boost for VisitBritain and VisitLondon; more powers for the Mayor to oversee planning decisions and a full-time tourism minister.
