Triesman forced to relinquish FA role
Lord Triesman has been forced to resign as chair of both the Football Association (FA) and England's bid for the 2018 World Cup, following alleged comments published in a national newspaper.
According to the Mail on Sunday, Triesman told a former aide that Spain would withdraw its bid to host the tournament if Russia - another bidder - helped it to bribe referees at this year's World Cup. Triesman said: "I have decided to resign as chairman of the FA and the 2018 Bid board. A private conversation with someone whom I thought to be a friend was taped without my knowledge and passed to a national newspaper.
"In that conversation I commentated on speculation circulating about conspiracies around the world. Those comments were never intended to be taken seriously as indeed is the case with many private conversations." FIFA vice president Geoff Thompson has been appointed to chair the 2018 bid, following Triesman's departure. Roger Burden and David Sheepshanks have been named joint acting chairs of the FA.
