Tweedy welcomes Tory call for private philanthropy
The chief executive of Arts & Business, Colin Tweedy, has supported calls by shadow culture secretary Jeremy Hunt for the creation of a US-style philanthropy plan for the arts in the UK.
In his first big speech becoming the conservative spokesperson for arts, Hunt said a Conservative government would consider radical reform to the Arts Council and create a culture of philanthropy by strengthening gift aid and loosening regulations regarding the way benefactors are thanked by arts organisations.
"The shadow secretary is absolutely right to highlight the role of individuals," Tweedy said. "Our figures show that private giving remains the fastest growing and largest piece of private sector investment in culture."
"Together, we must constantly push the boundaries for individuals to engage and contribute to the arts."
The comments come just weeks after figures from Arts & Business revealed that private support for the arts during 2006-7 reached a record £599.5m, an 11 per cent increase on the year before.
