UK air traffic subject to ash disruption
Flights from a number of airports across Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England could face disruption today (24 May) due to the eruption of Iceland's Grimsvötn volcano.
According to the Met Office, an area of volcanic ash is poised to drift over parts of the UK between 1pm and 7pm and could result in cancellations. Air traffic control services provider NATS said that Londonderry, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Prestwick, Newcastle, Carlisle, Durham Tees Valley and Cumbernauld would be affected.
However, the Civil Aviation Authority confirmed on 23 May that other parts of the UK and Ireland could also experience disruption to air travel later this week. Last year, ash from Iceland's Eyjafjallajoekull volcano caused severe disruption to air traffic across the UK and continental Europe, with a number of countries shutting airspace.
