UK to introduce minimum alcohol pricing
Home Secretary Theresa May has confirmed plans for the introduction of minimum pricing on "dangerous drinks" as part of the government's new Alcohol Strategy.
Cheap vodka and super-strength lagers are among those targeted by the measure, although May insisted that the price of a "normal pint" at a pub will not go up under the strategy.
May said: "The dangerous drinks will become more expensive; the price of a normal pint in the local pub will not increase by a single penny."
In response to the minimum pricing plan, the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) said it would work with the government to ensure any measures did not affect responsible drinkers.
BBPA chief executive Brigid Simmonds said: "We want to work with the government to tackle alcohol misuse and we will actively engage with them on their plans.
"Good progress in tackling binge drinking is already being made and it is important further measures are proportionate and target problem drinkers."
The Scottish Government is also looking to introduce a minimum price per unit of alcohol.
