UK’s biggest skateboarding plaza opens
A £500,000 skateboarding plaza has opened in Stoke-on-Trent’s 49-hectare Central Forest Park.
Part of the Greening for Growth programme, funding for the plaza came from Advantage West Midlands, Barclays Spaces for Sport, the Government Office for the West Midlands, Sport England and Staffordshire Environmental Fund through the Landfill Tax Credit System.
Stoke Skate Plaza is part of more than £3m of improvements which will take place in Central Forest Park over the next two years to transform the space into a major attraction for the region.
Officially opened to the public on 28 October, the blueprint for the scheme was developed along the theme of an adventure park in partnership with the Stoke Association of Skateboarders.
Free to use, floodlit and open seven days a week, the plaza’s design was based around elements in city squares and streets. It includes a number of street-style obstacles such as handrails, grinding rails, steps, kerbed ledges, granite benches and grandstand seating for spectators.
Mayor, Mark Meredith, said: “The Stoke Skate Plaza is a great facility that really puts us on the map for adventure sport.”
Work will now continue in the park with the development of an adventure area for toddlers, a climbing area and a nature trail. Details: www.visitstoke.co.uk
