UN promotes 'peacebuilding' role of sport
United Nations (UN) secretary-general Ban Ki-moon has called for sport to be included in the organisation's development, peacebuilding and peacekeeping programmes.
Addressing delegates at the Second International Forum on Sport, Peace and Development in Geneva, Switzerland, Ban said sport helped to create positive role models. Ban also said major global events - such as the Olympics, the cricket and football World Cups and the Super Bowl - could help raise awareness of issues from around the world.
At the conclusion of the forum, a resolution called on the UN to include access to physical activity as an indicator in its human development indexes. Other recommendations will see world governments asked to increase their support for the development of sporting programmes and governing bodies encouraged to hold events in emerging nations.
Ban said: "[Sport] is a worldwide industry whose practices can have widespread impact. Most of all, it is a powerful tool for progress and for development. "We all know that children and youth are often those who suffer most from conflicts. Sports programmes can help give them a second chance - a chance to learn skills and regain confidence."
