US consortium looks for casino site in Blackpool
The owners of Blackpool nightclub, The Syndicate Superclub, have said they have turned down an offer in excess of £15m from a Las Vegas nightclub consortium looking to develop the town’s first major casino.
Mike Nordwind, director of The Syndicate, said the company – which he cannot name due to a confidentiality agreement, but which operates nightclubs in Nevada, Atlantic City and New York – was looking for a foothold into Blackpool and saw the future potential of casinos in the resort.
Nordwind said he and his fellow directors – his wife and two children – had turned down the offer because they intended to remain loyal to the people of Blackpool who have supported the club since they opened.
“We will continue to invest more of our money into the award-winning venue,” he said. “We don’t intend to take the money and run.”
The club won BEDA’s UK Club of the Year and Northern Club of the Year awards this year and Nordwind’s wife, Sandra, recently won the 2004 Blackpool Tourism Award for Entrepreneur of the Year and Nightclub of the Year.
The American consortium has requested first refusal should the family change its mind and decide to sell the venue.
