US fitness industry bearing up against downturn
The US fitness industry is expected to grow by 27 per cent through to 2016, according to a new survey.
The seventh biennial IDEA Fitness Industry Compensation Survey backed up the US Department of Labor’s statistic with a report that claims the industry will experience sustained growth despite the economic downturn.
The survey was compiled from the responses of 501 IDEA members, holding eight different positions in the industry: fitness programme directors, personal training directors, group exercise coordinators, personal trainers, fitness floor staff, group fitness instructors, specialty instructors and yoga/Pilates instructors.
It found that yoga and Pilates instructors receive the highest hourly pay of all instructors (US$33.25), and have kept up with inflation. Salaries for programme directors are higher in the west, averaging US$52,808 compared to US$42,000-US$47,000 in other US regions.
Mean salaries for other positions were revealed as the following: fitness/programme directors (US$46,920), personal trainers (US$39,074), and group exercise coordinators (US$33,364).
More than half (58 per cent) of respondents said their companies pay for staff to receive continuing education.
Kathie Davis, co-founder and executive director of IDEA Health & Fitness Association, said: “Continued wages increases and growth in the fitness industry reinforces the vital role that fitness professionals play in our daily lives. These dedicated professionals, who gladly share their knowledge, skill and passion to help their clients lead healthier, more active lives, are being recognised and well rewarded for their efforts.”
