United confirms bid approach
Manchester United football club (MUFC) has confirmed it has received a takeover offer from an undisclosed bidder, believed to be Malcolm Glazier.
The US-based sports tycoon already owns the American football team Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In a statement, a spokesperson for MUFC admitted the club had been approached but declined to identify the bidder or details of the offer.
He said: “We confirm a preliminary approach has been made regarding an offer for the company which contains a number of significant conditions.
“MUFC is seeking clarification of this proposal and at this stage it is unclear whether any offer will be made.”
The announcement comes just a week after the club said pre-tax profits were down 30 per cent to £27.9m from £39.3m in 2003, while turnover fell to £169m from the 2003 figure of £173m.
