Upgrade for Trafalgar Square fountains
A new environmentally friendly lighting system has been installed as part of a two-month refurbishment of the fountains at Trafalgar Square in central London.
Work began at the Grade II*-listed fountains in March, which also included the renovation of metalwork, the conservation of the site's merman, dolphin and triton sculptures, as well as the cleaning, pointing and repair of stonework. The new LED lighting system has replaced the previous lighting, and will enable the fountains to be illuminated in a range of different colours to coincide with major events staged at Trafalgar Square.
London mayor Boris Johnson said: "This is the final major piece of the transformation of one the greatest public squares in time for the 2012 Games." "It brings together the old and the new in a way that London does so well and 60 years since work began on the present layout, it is a brilliant way to help kick off the Story of London festival - which is about celebrating the capital's past, present and future."
The refurbishment of the fountains follows the restoration of Nelson's Column in 2006, and the part-pedestrianastion of Trafalgar Square in 2003.
