Urban Fitness sets sights on London gym empire

A new health club chain has launched its debut site in central London, with plans for multiple locations across Zones 1 and 2 over the next couple of years.

Co-founded by former Shokk CEO Jonathan Williams and Charles Tantram, Urban Fitness aims to offer premium fitness equipment, evidence-based workout programmes and group exercise classes for £29.99 on a rolling monthly agreement.

The debut site, Urban Fitness Sugar House, opened last month near Aldgate station. The gym offers a breadth of fitness programmes – covering ‘Get Active,’ healthy eating, functional training, muscle strength, sport specific fitness, martial arts & boxing, ante/post natal and kettlebells – as well as a range of Les Mills and in-house group exercise classes.

The gym’s extensive range of cardio equipment includes treadmills from Cybex’s premium 790 series, 770 series Arc Trainers and bikes as well as the new SPARC – a self-powered resisted cardio machine designed for HIIT or circuit workouts. In addition, the gym has a large dedicated strength training area; equipped with 12 pieces from Cybex’s Eagle NX and Prestige VRS selectorised lines, Big Iron half racks, bespoke Jungle Gym and Bravo Functional Trainers. A range of free weight and plate loaded equipment was also installed.

Elsewhere, the gym houses Wattbikes, WaterRowers, a dedicated indoor ‘Peloton’ cycling studio equipped with Keiser M3 Bikes, an extensive range of functional training equipment and a group exercise studio.

“We are focused on building the Urban Fitness London brand and with plans to roll out multiple sites across the capital, the relationship with our key suppliers becomes paramount and we view Cybex as an important and valued partner in this process,” said Williams.

“We aim to offer our members the absolute best across every aspect of our facility in order to create an inspiring environment that helps every single one achieve their long term active, lifestyle goals.”
