Visits to the UK up 6 per cent
A healthy increase in Western European visitors buoyed the number of foreign tourists coming to the UK at the beginning of this year, according to UKinbound’s latest business barometer.
Overseas visitor arrivals were up 6.1 per cent in January 2005 compared with January 2004, despite “lacklustre” long-haul inquiry levels and the low dollar.
Stephen Dowd, UKinbound’s chief executive, said: “The economic outlook remains stable, if uninspiring, as the US dollar continues to hover around the $1.93 to the pound level and the period of relative stability in oil prices continues. There seems little likelihood of any significant changes in the short term and we can reasonably expect current trading conditions to persist at least until the summer months.”
According to the report, only 20 per cent of tour operators responding to the survey had completed their plans to accommodate the influx of Chinese tourists under the new Approved Destination Status (ADS) scheme.
The ADS scheme greatly simplifies the process for Chinese tourists wanting to visit the UK. Details: www.ukinbound.org
