Blackpool Council’s park ranger service has teamed up with the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BTCV) to launch a volunteer scheme to boost the town’s parks and nature reserves.

Local people are being invited to become volunteer rangers and take part in conservation work, public events, litter picking, patrols and public liaison. Additional activities include wildlife surveys and habit management.

Cllr David Owen, cabinet member for culture and leisure, said: “Our parks, open spaces, nature reserves and trails are there for everyone to enjoy because many people have served over the years to preserve, protect and improve them.

“Volunteering gives people the opportunity to pursue a special interest such as walking, teaching and spending time outdoors while enjoying the company of fellow volunteers.”

Volunteer rangers will receive a basic uniform, formal induction and training.

In addition, BTCV has extended its nationwide youth volunteering charity – known as V – to Blackpool. Youngsters aged 16–25 can take part in conservation days at Stanley Park, Kincraig Lake, Woodland Gardens and Marton Mere Local Nature Reserve.
