Volunteers to be given qualifications at Commonwealth Games
The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games may provide an ideal opportunity for volunteers to not only gain experience in the sports sector but also take recognised qualifications.
Derek Casey, director of the bid consortium, said: “The skills that our 15,000 volunteers will have will vary widely, as we expect they will come from every background, from unskilled to professional and from throughout the country.
“Many will want to continue to volunteer just for the love of it. However, a qualification would recognise that some volunteers are gaining key skills through being part of the Games. What a great personal legacy.”
Casey has spoken with the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) and the Scottish Qualifications Authority (QCA) to establish what kind of qualification would be appropriate and in recognition of which skills.
Aileen Ponton, chief executive of SCQF, added: “Recognising the value of an individual’s learning, skills and knowledge is what the SCQF is all about, and between now and 2014 we and our partners will work towards finding a way to provide tangible on-going benefits to the Games’ volunteers.”
Volunteers will help at test events such as the Scottish National Swimming Championships in March 2014, as well as to welcome visitors, transport officials, help spectators with tickets and directions and assist officials at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the actual Games.
