The Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation (WSFF) has launched the Sweat in the City initiative, designed to encourage women to be more active.

Managed in partnership with the Fitness Industry Association (FIA), the project is aimed at women aged between 16-24 living in London who currently do little or no exercise.

WSFF chief executive, Sue Tibballs, said: "Young women are half as active as young men - a statistic Sweat in the City will help us tackle.

"The scheme provides us with a unique way to speak to women and better understand how to inspire them to become, and stay, active."

Sweat in the City will offer 3,000 packages of free and mentored gym membership at 100 centres across the capital, which women can register for at the initiative's website. Successful applicants will be join a 12-week programme starting on 29 September, involving free gym membership, fortnightly group exercise sessions and access to an exclusive online social network.

As part of the WSFF project, participants will be required to answer a series of questions at the beginning and end of the 12-week programme which are designed to track any changes in attitude towards physical activity.

It follows WSFF research which claims that 81 per cent of women do not do enough exercise to benefit their health, and that women aged between 16-24 are half as active as young men.

The scheme was launched by Jessica Taylor, wife of England cricketer Kevin Pietersen and former member of the pop group Liberty X, on 1 September. She said: "Exercise can be so daunting - especially if you haven't done any for a while - so it's great to have a scheme like Sweat in the City help make it more social."
