Welsh delegation travels to Kurdistan
Senior officials from the Sports Council for Wales (SCW) have travelled to Northern Iraq.
The delegation, led by SCW's chief executive Huw Jones, will help local officials to develop sport in the region.
Jones and two colleagues will be leading workshops as part of a two-day conference in the region's capital of Erbil. The delegation will also meet with senior ministers and policy advisors, passing on their experience and expertise.
"Politically, Wales and Kurdistan share broadly similar structures and, with a population of four million, the region is just bigger than Wales," Jones said.
"The local government is very keen to develop sports opportunities and are looking at our structures for advice - just as we would look to Australia or New Zealand. They will be looking at the work we do in schools and in communities as well as how we help sportsmen and women achieve at the very highest levels."
The conference will be hosted by the Kurdistan Minister for Sports and Youth, Mr Taha Barwary.
Barwary said: "We know that sport is a powerful tool that it can bring communities together and improve people's quality of life.
"We hope to learn more about how sport is funded and run, how to involve women, youth and the disabled in sport, and how to help talented athletes excel to become formidable competitors at an international level."
