Welsh heritage tourism scheme revealed
Pembrokeshire's military history is to be revealed as one of the first projects to benefit from the Welsh Assembly Government's £19m Heritage Tourism initiative.
The £500,000 Defence of the Realm scheme will see a former defence battery at Chapel Bay Fort restored and opened to the public in Angle. A new visitor centre and improved aviation exhibition will be created at Carew Cheriton airfield, while a heritage centre will open at Dale. A travelling exhibition of war art is also planned.
Defence of the Realm is being delivered by a consortium led by Pembrokeshire County Council and is the first of a number of schemes expected to be funded by the Welsh Assembly. Heritage minister Alun Ffred Jones said: "Defence of the Realm will not only attract more visitors to enjoy Pembrokeshire's outstanding heritage, it will also generate employment opportunities for the local community and attract further investment to boost the region's well established tourism industry."
In addition to the council, the consortium includes Chapel Bay Fort and Museum; Pembroke Dock Museum Trust and Carew Control Tower Group. Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority is supporting the scheme. Image: Chapel Bay Fort
